Baby and Me: Work Out Edition

As a new mom, it can be hard to balance time with your child and staying healthy. Do your body and your baby a favor by working out together! In addition to running around after your toddler or holding your infant all the time, check out a variety of new workouts to continue burning calories and staying in shape.

Work Out With Baby

Running

A cooler summer morning or evening is a good time to get out and enjoy the weather without worrying about the heat. If you are an avid running, invest in a jogging stroller so both you and your child can spend some time outside. If your baby is under six months, be sure you have a stroller with a car seat adapter to keep the baby’s head and neck stable. You may also want to consider a weather shield to avoid bugs or debris.

Squats

What better weight could you use than your baby? Use a front carrier for extra stability. Be sure you keep your weight over your heals rather than bending forward.

Lunges

Like squats, you can also hold your baby while doing lunges. Take a big step forward, making sure your knee isn’t going over your toe. Be sure to do both sides! If you don’t feel comfortable holding your baby or need some extra help balancing, use a stroller and push it as you lower, alternating legs.

Leg Extensions

Leg extensions are easy to do anywhere, whether you’re at home on the couch or sitting on a park bench. Let your baby sit on your shin or top of your foot while you bend and extend your leg. Hold his or her hands while you work your quad.

Shoulder Press

For a good arm workout, stand up and hold your baby. Lift your child over your head, and bring him or her back down. Be sure to keep your core tight!

Glute Lifts

Lie down on your back, and have your baby sit on your lower tummy (assuming he or she is older than six months). Lift your hips and squeeze your glutes, then lower. The added weight makes for a great workout.
