Though embracing every person that walks through our doors has always been our deepest core value, we have made it a goal to become more outspoken about it. Today we are using our platform to educate our following about the incredible Hispanic Heritage Month. This 30 days stint is meant to honor and observe the vibrant culture, historic figures, scientific advancements, and noteworthy fine art that has come from the Hispanic, Latinx, and Latino-identified communities.
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
According to hispanicheritagemonth.gov, Hispanic Heritage Month takes place every year and gives people the opportunity to “join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.”
When is Hispanic Heritage Month?
The observance of Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15th and ends on October 15th.
When did Hispanic Heritage Month come about?
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the National Hispanic Heritage week bill into law in 1968. It wasn’t until about 20 years later, Representative Esteban Torres of California, proposed a bill to expand the week to a month.
What is significant about the dates?
The first day of Hispanic Heritage Month is historically significant because it is the Independence day of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It’s also important to note that September 16th is Mexico’s Independence Day, Chile’s is on Septemeber 18th, and Belize is on September 21st.
What is the difference between Hispanic and Latino/x?
According to Merriam Webster, Hispanic is used to describe people from Spanish speaking countries. Latino is used to describe people who descend from Latin-American countries — but whose language isn’t necessarily Spanish. Lastly, Latinx is a gender-neutral, pan-ethnic label.
