PUNCHING FOR EMPOWERMENT

There is nothing more empowering than taking a boxing class and letting out any pent up aggression…sometimes I leave class and realize how much weight has actually been lifted off my shoulders from just letting it all out.

Refreshingly transparent and energetic TITLE Boxing Club Katy member, Perla, is on a mission to make her physical and mental health top priority. Like many people across the country, she has faced uncertainty and stress in the last few months. In an unfortunate turn of events, Perla found herself out of work, gaining unwanted weight, and ultimately having low self-esteem. However, this spell did not last long! She lifted her head high and began to make changes that eventually led to weight loss, a clear mind, and a positive attitude. “I have always made fitness a priority, even when I was working three jobs in college, I found value in taking fitness classes. I realized I need those endorphins at least every other day”, she told us.

Walking through the TITLE Boxing Club Katy doors wasn’t so out of character for Perla, as she has had a fascination with boxing since she was a little girl. “My parents sent my brothers to a boxing gym to keep them out of trouble when they were in high school and they were my babysitters at the time so I always went with them,” she explained. Perla watched her brothers learn the sport and became enamored with the intensity, discipline, and empowerment that coincided with it. Fast-forward several years and she now enjoys the calorie-scorching and aggression relief herself at TITLE.

“With boxing, I feel protected in many ways, I can protect myself and I feel mentally protected as well,” she explained her reasoning for continuing to box. As Perla continues her health journey, she plans to focus on both the physical and mental benefits of exercise. “There is nothing more empowering than taking a boxing class and letting out any pent up aggression…sometimes I leave class and realize how much weight has actually been lifted off my shoulders from just letting it all out,” Perla recounted.

Today, Perla’s goals are primarily to stay motivated, eat well, and to forgive herself on days she’s just not feeling it. She plans on accomplishing this by continuing to participate in fitness classes she enjoys and seeking accountability in her peers. When asked what advice she would give to someone on the fence about giving boxing a try she replied, “You will go in and see such a diverse crowd of short, tall, thin, plus-sized and everything-in-between people that it won’t be intimidating…plus everyone is so friendly and will walk you through everything you need to know.”
