Before and After

Success is defined as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.”  For TITLE Boxing Club Greensboro member Shannon, success was finding a gym that aided in strengthening both mind and body.

Shannon came to TITLE Boxing Club after a previous boxing gym membership left a desire for a better connection to the workout and the trainers. Shannon fell away from that gym’s workouts but quickly realized how paramount boxing was in helping balance stress levels and mental health, and so began the search for a new boxing gym.

“I knew I needed to find a way back into a gym that aligned with my values, physically and mentally. I needed to move my body in a way that wasn’t just working out for the sake of working out. I needed a workout that would help me get the anxious energy out of my body and help me get a grasp back on my mental health. Elena encouraged me to give TITLE a try, and I’ve been coming ever since.”

 

TITLE helped Shannon get back to boxing and remain consistent with a fitness routine thanks to modifications, with trainers paying attention to Shannon’s chronic knee weakness and back issues and offering adjustments and exercise modifications to help Shannon stay in the fight.

“By trainers normalizing modifications, I’ve seen massive long term increases in my knee strength and stability. I’ve also become much more gentle with myself in my self-talk when I need to modify. I’ll modify the modifications if that’s what I need to do to finish the workout. I’ll celebrate my body for what it can do, instead of criticizing it for what it cannot. That’s transformative.”

 

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and closed the club temporarily (as it did for many other fitness facilities across the country), Shannon realized just how critical an in-person bag workout is for helping to manage wellness and for providing social connections. Once the club was able to re-open, Shannon made getting back into the Club a priority.

“I love that hurts-so-good feeling after a challenging boxing class. I really love going to a class after a stressful day and boxing it out to clear my mind and relieve tension from my body. I love that the trainers are always going around the room and encouraging us throughout classes. I love making eye contact across the heavy bag with other people and knowing that I’m not in it alone.”
